“Everything that’s happening,” says Yenefer (Anya Chalotra), “it’s all connected. And she’s at the center of it.”
The “she” in question is Princess Ciri (Freya Allen), whose super-special powers mean everyone wants to get their hands on her. A lot happened in the second season of The Witcher, and this trailer—packed with slow-motion magic and portentous dialogue—definitely suggests the show’s third season isn’t slowing down at all.
Here’s the synopsis for season three, the last with Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia (Liam Hemsworth steps in after this):
As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where they hope to uncover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.
According to Netflix, season three is “inspired” by Andrzej Sapkowski’s third Witcher book, Time of Contempt. Creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said, “We get to see everything on the Continent change, which is super exciting.”
And it involves boatloads of fangs, apparently. The Witcher returns in two volumes: Volume 1 (episodes 1-5) arrives June 29th, with Volume 2 (episodes 6-8) following on July 27th.
